When we built ThirdMoney, the goal was simple: give every African access to a reliable, multi-currency digital wallet — no bank account required. Today, ThirdMoney operates across 7 African countries and has processed over $10 million in transactions, serving more than 50,000 active users.

The Problem We Set Out to Solve

Africa has a unique financial landscape. A significant proportion of the population is unbanked — yet mobile phone penetration is high and growing. Traditional banking infrastructure is often expensive, inaccessible, or simply unavailable outside major urban centres.

We saw an opportunity to create a truly African fintech product: one that works with mobile money, supports multiple local currencies, and requires nothing more than a phone number to get started.

What ThirdMoney Offers

ThirdMoney is a full-featured digital wallet and financial platform. Here is what users can do on the platform today:

  • Multi-currency wallet: Hold and transact in UGX, KES, TZS, RWF, NGN, GHS, and ZAR — all from one account.
  • Send & receive money: Instant transfers to other ThirdMoney users or directly to mobile money numbers across supported countries.
  • Virtual & physical cards: Users can generate virtual Visa/Mastercard cards for online shopping, or order a physical card.
  • Merchant tools: Businesses can accept ThirdMoney payments online and in-store, with a merchant dashboard for transaction monitoring and settlement.
  • Bill payments: Pay utilities, airtime, and data directly from the wallet.
  • Savings pockets: Set aside funds in dedicated savings pockets with goal-based targets.

The Technical Architecture

ThirdMoney is built on a microservices architecture to support the scale and reliability that financial systems demand. The platform maintains 99.9% uptime SLA across all supported countries. Key technical components include:

  • A core ledger engine handling multi-currency balances with double-entry accounting
  • Real-time currency conversion using live exchange rate feeds
  • Integration with mobile money APIs across 7 countries (MTN, Airtel, M-Pesa, and others)
  • PCI-DSS aligned card processing infrastructure for virtual and physical cards
  • SMS and push notification delivery via our own ThirdText infrastructure

Operating Across 7 African Markets

Launching a fintech platform in a single African country is challenging. Launching across 7 requires navigating different regulatory environments, payment rails, KYC requirements, and consumer behaviours. ThirdMoney has built a compliance framework that handles country-specific requirements while maintaining a unified user experience.

The platform is currently live in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa, with more markets on the roadmap.

What This Means for Our Clients

ThirdMoney is not just our own product — it is proof of what Thirdsan can build. Every piece of this infrastructure — the wallet engine, the mobile money integrations, the card issuing, the merchant dashboard — is technology we can apply to custom fintech projects for our clients. If you are building a payment platform, a lending product, or a savings app, we have done this at scale. Let's talk about your fintech project.
