Access to quality educational materials is one of the most persistent challenges facing students across Africa. A textbook that costs 80,000 UGX is simply out of reach for many families. ELibrary Africa was our answer: a digital library providing thousands of eBooks, audiobooks, and educational videos at a fraction of the cost.

The Problem We Were Solving

Uganda's education system has a critical resource gap. Government schools often lack adequate textbooks. Private school students have better access, but still face the cost and availability constraints of physical books. Meanwhile, mobile phone penetration in Uganda is over 70% — meaning most students already carry a potential library in their pocket.

The opportunity was clear: build a platform that delivers curriculum-aligned educational content directly to students' phones at an affordable subscription price.

Technical Architecture

ELibrary Africa was built on a custom PHP/MySQL stack with several key technical requirements:

  • OTP Authentication: Many students don't have email addresses. We integrated Africa's Talking SMS API to provide phone-number-based OTP authentication — no email required.
  • Content delivery optimisation: With Uganda's variable internet speeds, content needed to be lightweight. eBooks are served as paginated HTML rather than heavy PDF downloads.
  • Subscription and access control: A tiered subscription model with mobile money payment integration (MTN and Airtel) lets students pay weekly, monthly, or termly.
  • Content management: A custom CMS allows the editorial team to upload, categorise, and manage thousands of resources across subject areas and education levels.
  • Curriculum alignment: Content is tagged by Uganda's NCDC curriculum standards and education levels (Primary, Secondary, Tertiary).

The Launch and Growth

ELibrary Africa launched with 500 resources and has grown to over 3,000 curated educational materials — eBooks, audiobooks, and on-demand video lessons. The platform now serves students across Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda.

What We Learned

The most important lesson from ELibrary Africa was the value of understanding your user's actual context. Our initial design assumed consistent data connectivity — we quickly learned that offline access and low-bandwidth optimisation were non-negotiable for an African EdTech platform. We rebuilt the content delivery system to function on 2G connections, which dramatically expanded our reach.
